A true corkscrew, cut by hand.

A boxwood spiral is the hardest classic shape to grow and the easiest to get wrong — the turns have to be even, separated and cut into a plant dense enough to hold them. These are hand-clipped over years, not trained around a form.

Ten spirals from $895, four to nine feet. At these sizes pieces travel by freight, so delivery is quoted with the spiral rather than hidden in the price.

Learn more about this topiary, care, and receiving your plant for longevity

How it’s made:

Plant Selection: Evergreen plants with dense foliage, such as yew, boxwood, or juniper, are commonly used for spiral topiary.
Training: Young plants are carefully guided and pruned to encourage the desired spiral form. This process can take several years of meticulous shaping and trimming.
Maintenance: Regular pruning is essential to maintain the spiral shape and ensure the plant’s health. This typically involves trimming new growth and removing any stray branches that disrupt the spiral pattern.
Popular Types of Live Spiral Topiary:

Eugenia Spiral Topiary: A popular choice for its dense foliage and ability to withstand pruning.
Boxwood Spiral Topiary: Known for its compact growth habit and glossy green leaves.
Yew Spiral Topiary: A versatile evergreen that can be trained into various shapes, including spirals.

Questions about spiral topiary

How is a boxwood spiral made?

A boxwood spiral is cut by hand into a dense, well-grown plant, one turn at a time, over several seasons. That is why a good one costs what it does — the shape is years of growth and clipping, not a frame.

How do I keep the spiral sharp?

Trim lightly once or twice in the growing season, following the existing turns rather than cutting new ones. The week of June 1 is our own rule, so new growth covers the cuts by late summer.

Do spirals need full sun?

Bright light keeps a spiral dense, which is what keeps the turns readable. In poor light the plant thins and the shape blurs — that is when a preserved spiral is the better answer.

How are large spirals delivered?

By freight, upright and crated, across the US and Canada. Delivery is quoted with the piece so the full cost is settled before anything ships.
