Viburnum sargentii Onandaga

Viburnum sargentii Onandaga
Viburnum sargentii Onandaga
A spectacular specimen of Viburnum Onandaga grows on the hillside beneath our Clematis Stockfield. Upright and rounded in habit, this viburnum slowly grows into a small tree. An ideal candidate for adding to moss animal topiaries. Its deciduous foliage is blushed maroon as it emerges and then changes to green. The contrast between the young and maturing foliage is very dramatic. In the autumn the foliage once again undergoes a dramatic transformation as it turns to deep red. The flower buds also are maroon. They open to white six petalled flowers that are arranged in a fashion similar to a hydrangea flower. In the autumn, luminous scarlet fruits contrast with the rich red of the leaves. This winning shrub is the result of the hybrid selections of Dr. Donald Egolf at our US National Arboretum. It was introduced to the public in 1966 and has been in the nursery trade ever since. Seasonality is Late spring. Measurements are around 10 feet x 6 feet Colors are White flowers Hardiness Zones: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
