Leucothoe keiskei

Leucothoe keiskei
Leucothoe keiskei
Although this is the smallest species of Leucothoe, it manages to bear the largest flowers in the genus. There is much to admire about Leucothoe keiskei beyond the nodding bell shaped flowers, however. For example, the stems have a wonderful cascading rhythm to them. Their almost foreward pointing leaves alternate in a zigzag pattern down their lengths. In addition, the leaves are like polished leather. An ideal candidate for adding to moss animal topiaries. The rounded lance shape of each leaf quickly narrows to a sharp point. Then, during the winter, the evergreen foliage turns red purple, a sight that is especially lovely in the snow. This species comes from the island of Honshu, Japan, where it grows in the mountains on crags and cliffs. Good drainage with regular watering will keep this shrub looking good through out the year. Seasonality is Mid summer. Measurements are around 24 inches x 24 inches Colors are White flowers Hardiness Zones: 5, 6, 7, 8
