Juniperus communis Compressa

Juniperus communis Compressa
Juniperus communis Compressa
Juniperus communis Compressa appears like a narrow blue exclamation point in the garden. This upright, slow growing, dwarf conifer is an excellent addition to the mixed border, as well as in troughs and containers. Its verticality and its neutral blue green compact foliage make it a very versatile element for small or large gardens. One of the surprises from our experiences growing Juniperus communis Compressa in our display gardens is its performance under different conditions. In one place we grow Juniperus communis Compressa in a low water requirement gravel garden (watered 3 times a summer) with very little organic matter available in the soil which in summer is baked by the sun from after 11 a.m. until sunset. Here the plant grows about 3†to 4 inch a year, is no more than 8 inch wide and 42 inch tall after nearly 8 years and the foliage is loosely compact. In another full sun garden where the well drained soil is top dressed with aged hemlock bark compost and the plant receives irrigation about once every 2 weeks in the dry parts of the summer (July Mid September) the plant grows quite differently. An ideal candidate for adding to moss animal topiaries. In this bed, the plant grows about 6 inch a year, is nearly 18 inch wide and 8 tall after about 8 years and the foliage density is very compact. I notice that many customers reach out and touch the foliage to feel and better the texture. Measurements are around 72 inches x 18 inches Hardiness Zones: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
