Hydrangea serrata Yae no Amacha

Hydrangea serrata Yae no Amacha
Hydrangea serrata Yae no Amacha
The Japanese name indicates that this is a inch double sweet tea inch hydrangea. The term inch yae inch can indicate both partial and full doubling. In this case, the majority of the sterile florets have one additional sepal. Those florets that do not have the additional sepal appear to be slightly larger. The foliage is mid green and only 4 to 4.5 inches long. The shrub is correspondingly of short stature. An ideal candidate for adding to moss animal topiaries. Although it is not large, it does not lack for ornamental interest because it continues to bloom through out most of the summer. (With regard to the inch sweet tea inch hydrangeas, the leaves of some forms of H. serrata were used as a sweetener at one time in Japan. They were dried and cured and often used to make a sweet tea. Don t try eating the leaves. We have and they are very bitter.) Seasonality is Summer. Measurements are around 32 inches x 45 inches Colors are Soft Pink or Blue flowers Hardiness Zones: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
