Clematis fremontii

Clematis fremontii
Clematis fremontii
Clematis fremontii is endemic to areas of central northern Kansas and south central Nebraska. It is rarely grown in home gardens because it is said to be fussy but we have found that it needs well draining soil and, if provided with grit or a sandy loam, can easily be grown in a container or the garden. The large leaves are rounded and are attached to the stout stems with very short leaf petioles. An ideal candidate for adding to moss animal topiaries. They appear to be perfoliate. Their deep veining and leathery surface are handsome. The tubular flowers are solitary, rising slightly above the top pair of leaves. Individual flowers can measure up to 1.5 inches in length. They are thick, ribbed, and slightly nodding. Their reflexed sepal tips expand to reveal the yellow anther tips with inch Seasonality is May and June. Measurements are around 16 inches x 16 inches Colors are Lavender Blue to Purple flowers Hardiness Zones: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
